Last week the Oregon Wine Board hosted a successful viticulture workshop with Dr. Richard Smart. The morning classroom session was held at Linfield College and included lectures on two topics: What is New with Canopy Management and Timely Trunk Renewal. The Canopy Management presentation summarized a variety of trellis systems and important factors to consider. The Timely Trunk Renewal presentation introduced an approach to help restore the health of infected plants, maximize production of infected vineyards and reduce new infections. After lunch, Dr. Smart demonstrated his techniques for alternative trunk renewal in a nearby vineyard, creating a tangible context for his approach. Additionally, Dr. Smart recognized Scott Henry for his work and contributions to advancing trellis systems. Dr. Smart presented him with the Oxford Companion to Wine, a case of wine from Oyster Bay and a personalized letter from the Executive Chairman of Delegat Group Limited, a premium wine company that utilizes Scott Henry’s canopy system in their 20 vineyards in three prominent wine growing regions.
