Decanter’s Charles Curtis MW seeks Oregon Chardonnay samples by April 18

Wine reviewer Charles Curtis MW has been commissioned to write an article for a summer issue of Decanter. It is a long-ish article on Oregon Chardonnay and for this, he is gathering samples from Oregon producers. No vintage specifically, but the Chardonnay must be available in New York, at least to ship directly to customers. It is not necessary that these wines are available internationally.

These wines should be currently available – nothing rare, ancient or not yet released. He’ll need suggested retail prices and retailer or distributor names in New York, then the importer if available internationally. Must be a vintage currently for sale.

The thrust of the article will be: The current state of play of Oregon Chardonnay. While the price of white Burgundy may be out of reach for many US wine lovers (especially with tariffs), there are wines made in the same terroir-driven, elegant vein made much closer to home. A take on the state’s unique style of Chardonnay, the top producers, the strides in improvement over the years and – for those who like the cool-climate, high-acid, fresh, mineral and fruit driven styles of Burgundy over the oakiness of Napa or perhaps the fashion for more reductive styles in Australia – why we should be drinking more of them.

If you would like to participate, please ship two samples of each Chardonnay to (if screwcap, one is OK):

These must arrive by Friday April 18 at the latest, but he appreciates samples coming earlier, too. Please include:

  • Tech sheets on the wine(s)
  • This Chardonnay 2020 Decanter Wine Submission Form and either emailed to [email protected], or placed in the box with the wine and tech sheets.
  • Winery contact info in case Charles would like to talk further

Charles had planned to visit Oregon for tasting, but in light of Covid-19, he is tasting virtually in New York, and then will organize interviews by Skype or Zoom and do as much as possible in a virtual fashion.  He said, “if travel becomes more practicable closer to the publication date, I will still come in person” to Oregon.

Any questions on this may go to Sally at the Wine Board at [email protected]

Founded in 1975, Decanter is the oldest consumer wine publication in the UK. Today, Decanter reaches over 660,000 wine lovers every month from 99 countries around the globe.
