Impacts and Learning from the 2022 Frost Event
The freeze event in April 2022 affected many vineyards throughout Oregon. This type of freeze is not often seen in the Oregon’s wine grape regions, so the 2022 season proved to be a learning year for all. Join the session to learn about how the freeze event impacted vines and how to manage vines if faced with similar weather events in the future.
Speakers Bio
Dr. Skinkis conducts applied research and provides outreach and education programs for the Oregon wine grape industry statewide. Her research program focuses on applied viticulture and whole plant physiology studies designed to understand causes and management of vine vigor/vine balance and impacts on fruit composition and wine quality. Her research also includes work on yield (from bud fruitfulness to crop thinning and vine balance), fine-tuning canopy management methods, sustainable viticulture production, and understanding factors that drive industry production decision-making. As Extension Specialist, Patty develops educational programs and informational publications for the industry in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Her outreach efforts include bringing producers together in technical groups to foster information exchange between industry and academics. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate level viticulture courses at Oregon State University. Her efforts expand beyond Oregon, as she is a member of the National Clean Plant Network – Grapes Advisory Board, is an associated editor for the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture, and served as a board member and held leadership positions in the American Society for Enology and Viticulture.
Bree Stock MW is director of education at the Oregon Wine Board. A WSET educator since 2008, she is currently senior educator for WSET at Linfield University’s Evenstad Center for Wine Education. Bree became a Master of Wine in 2016 and her career spans two decades in the wine trade beginning with sommelier and wine buying roles in the on-and-off trade and then importing. She has held national sales director and brand management roles in Australia with DeBortoli Wines and the Spanish Acquisition. She actively judges domestically and internationally and is a strong advocate for industry diversity and equal rights representation and is currently on the board of Assemblage, Women in Wine and the Institute of Masters of Wine North America, where she holds a position within their DEI steering committee. Co-owner of wine consulting company Constant Crush Advisors and Limited Addition Wine with her husband, Bree farms and makes wine in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
