Digging Deeper into Cover Crops: What’s Happening in Oregon? | Profundizar en los cultivos de cobertura: ¿Qué está sucediendo en Oregon?

Many of us have been using cover crops for years, but are we maximizing the potential of this practice? Here, we will learn more details about how cover crops are used in vineyards, including over-seeding to add diversity and current research on under-vine trials in Southern Oregon. Finally, we will hear about USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) cost-share programs that support cover-cropping and pollinator habitat in our region.

Speaker Bios

Amy received B.S. degrees in wildlife science and botany from Oregon State University in 2001. She has worked at the USDA NRCS Corvallis Plant Materials Center since 1997. The bulk of her career has been spent developing seed and plant production techniques of native species. More recently she has focused on using native species in working landscapes and creating specifications for NRCS programs with an emphasis on pollinator habitat.
Rebecca Sweet-Smith is owner of Buzz Cover Crop Seeds, which provides diverse and organic seed mixes for ecologically-minded vineyards and farms in the Pacific Northwest. In 2006 she completed a master’s thesis at Oregon State University on the physiological effects of annual and perennial cover crop treatments on two Pinot noir vineyards. For 12 years, she has worked in professional vineyard management in the Willamette Valley, including with Van Duzer Vineyards, Martinez Vineyard Services and Zenczak Ranch. Many of you may know Rebecca in her role as LIVE inspector, a hat she has worn for 13 years. Others will recognize her from the classrooms of Umpqua and Chemeketa Community Colleges.
Dr. Gordon Jones is extension agriculture faculty at the OSU Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center located in the Rogue Valley. He holds a B.S. in environmental studies and sustainable agriculture from Warren Wilson College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in crop and soil environmental sciences from Virginia Tech. Gordon conducts research, teaches extension classes and provides technical assistance around pasture, hay, and hemp management; soil fertility; cover crops; and pesticide stewardship in Jackson and Josephine counties.
