2025 Oregon Wine Symposium | Vineyard Protection for Business and Conservation Goals

February 27, 2025 | Education, Oregon Wine Symposium | 0 comments

Vineyard Protection for Business and Conservation Goals

Vineyards hold not only vines, wineries, and habitat, but also hidden opportunities to access tax deductions or grant funding while protecting the land for agriculture into the future. Oregon Agricultural Trust (OAT), a nonprofit land trust, will share about working land conservation easements. These voluntary agreements allow landowners to trade in unneeded development rights for financial benefits. OAT will also share the experiences of vineyard owners in Napa County who have donated these easements to meet their financial, succession planning, and conservation goals.

Speaker Bios

Nellie McAdams, Attorney & Executive Director, Oregon Agricultural Trust
Nellie grew up farming alongside her parents as the third generation on her family’s Gaston, Oregon hazelnut farm. She is an attorney and long-time advocate for farm succession planning and farmland preservation. As OAT’s founding Executive Director, Nellie is dedicated to working together to keep Oregon a great place to farm and live.

Carissa Cook (moderator), Director of Marketing & Insights, Oregon Wine Board
Carissa grew up in the wine and hospitality industry. Her family owned a wine bar and fine dining restaurant for over 40 years. Professionally, Carissa has 15 years of wine industry experience focused on brand storytelling, marketing and business strategy. She has a uniquely diverse background across all sides of the wine industry having worked for suppliers, distributors and as a buyer, as well as on both the wholesale and direct-to-consumer sides of the business. Most recently, Carissa led the development efforts for one of Oregon’s largest wineries, successfully overseeing the opening of four new tasting rooms. Prior to that, she managed trade marketing for the world’s largest wine supplier and owned a restaurant which she sold in 2019. Carissa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Advertising from the University of Nevada, Reno. Her love of Oregon Pinot Noir inspired her to move to Oregon and she immediately fell in love with the Pacific Northwest.
