Description | Communications Manager The Oregon Wine Board (OWB) is a semi-independent state agency primarily funded by the state’s wineries and vineyards. The OWB invests in marketing, promotion, media relations, research and education on behalf of Oregon’s wine industry. The Communication Manager builds relationships and maintains contact with key media influencers across all platforms providing focused content that is consistent with OWB’s strategic plan. This position is responsible for coordinating media outreach efforts with external partners including Travel Oregon and the Washington State Wine Commission and with Oregon’s regional wine associations. These include hosting key journalist visits, managing itineraries and media tastings, and supporting wine reviewer visits. The role also involves media coverage tracking, analysis and reporting. This manager will regularly assess the Oregon wine industry’s capacity for engaging successfully with media and providing industry guidance and training as needed. Here’s what you will do day-to-day: • Plan and manage public relations and media hosting • Develop, implement and measure strategic communications programs to further enhance OWB marketing efforts. • Segment and prioritize key media outlets and contacts and cultivate positive relationships. • Plan and coordinate media familiarization tours. • Develop compelling Oregon wine story angles and write clear and compelling press releases and media pitch letters. • Identify and report on media trends and analyze and measure results to achieve the highest visibility for Oregon wine. • Serve as contact for media inquiries. • Recommend social media strategies, content and metrics. • Track and synthesize media coverage to maintain and expand the dashboard of OR wine quality measurements. • Post communications related updates on Oregon Wine website and maintain updated press materials, including an updated press kit. • Monitor all coverage related to the Oregon wine industry daily, including publications, blogs, ratings, etc. for relevant mentions and make the information available to the OWB team and industry via coverage reports, emails, newsletters, and the website. • Maintain an organized library of all industry and general media publications and manage subscriptions program, including keeping records on subscriptions and renewals. • Develop a monthly report summarizing PR activities with metrics that quantify results. Identify opportunities to leverage the information and make recommendations for improvement. • Collaborate with regional wine associations regularly (ideally quarterly) to brainstorm about media pitches, and promoting events, milestones, and priorities for each region. • Identify opportunities to educate the wine industry on key tactics, trends, and opportunities for working with the media. • Develop and maintain editorial calendars for key publications that are consistent with the OWB strategic plan. • Participate in and/or lead planning and strategic brainstorming for all communications planning projects and events. • Serve as a liaison for communications functions with other members of OWB staff. Here’s what we are looking for: • Five plus years of communications and public relations experience required. Past assignments with fine wine media or in other enthusiast-driven consumer product categories is strongly preferred. • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience; (Communications or Journalism background is ideal) • Shows proactive, action-oriented management style • Demonstrates excellent written and oral presentation skills with focus on accuracy and attention to details • Has customer service skills that demonstrate proven success • Exhibits acute sense of judgment, tact, discretion and diplomacy • Shows proven commitment to internal and external collaboration and teamwork • Demonstrates ability to manage, execute and assess program success and adjust as warranted • Has proficiency with database management, Microsoft Office, and PR applications such as Meltwater, Google Analytics, etc. • Has extensive experience with developing targeted and engaging social media content • Familiarity with state government operations is a plus Location: Portland, OR Hybrid Office Schedule Reports To: Executive Director Position Type: Full time, salaried commensurate with experience To apply, email cover letter and resume to [email protected] |
