Letter from Marie Chambers

It’s been a busy fall for the OWB’s international marketing program. In September, we promoted Oregon wineries in Canada and Mexico through trade and media tastings, and educational seminars in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta. In October, we supported an inbound tour of buyers from Vancouver, British Columbia, hosted by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Looking ahead to 2022, the OWB International Marketing Committee has developed a robust event calendar that includes trade and consumer activities in 11 international markets. These are in addition to our annual Summer Inbound Trade Tour and ongoing media and consumer programming in the U.K. Our activities are designed to engage and educate importers and other influential wine trade professionals on Oregon Wine, as well as inspire international wine consumers. In most cases, our events are planned in partnership with the Washington State Wine Commission and are funded through federal grant programs. See the full schedule and details.
Believe it or not, February is just around the corner and that means the Oregon Wine Symposium is almost here! This year, the industry will benefit from a two-part event, with the Virtual OWS Education Series February 15-17 and the Live OWS Trade Show Experience March 9-10. The 2022 virtual education program will be shared shortly as the OWB education committee puts the final touches on the session plan. To register for either the Virtual Education Series hosted by OWB – or the Live Trade Show Experience hosted by the Oregon Winegrowers Association – visit oregonwinesymposium.com.

Lastly, the OWB has started the annual budget planning process for our 2022-23 fiscal year beginning July 1. We ask industry members who have additional ideas or input for the Board to consider in its planning process to let us know what’s on your mind by November 30 through this Budget Planning Input Form. Thank you to those who have already provided this valuable input.

OLCC Requests Data for Oregon Privilege Tax Online (OPTO)

OLCC is requesting our industry’s help with the following survey, which should take less than 5 minutes. As OLCC Executive Director Steve Marks mentioned in his remarks to the OWB’s all-industry forum last month, OLCC will soon begin their 2022 conversion to an online tax reporting and payment system for wineries and grape growers. This includes both the privilege tax and the grape tonnage tax. In an effort to help make the process as smooth as possible for wineries, OLCC is looking to gather additional information through the survey. The survey results will assist the Commission in segmenting winery licensees into the correct training groups. Please complete the survey by January 14, 2022.

Nominations for the 2022 Oregon Wine Industry Awards are being accepted until November 15. The awards recognize contributions to the industry in the categories of Lifetime Achievement, Founder, Outstanding Industry Leadership, Vineyard Excellence, and Industry Partner.
