Powdery Mildew Management

Come to this session to explore powdery mildew management for the 2018 growing season, fungicide resistance management, and cultural, registered synthetic and alternative product management tactics. Questions such as what producers can do now, when to start your program this season and how to manage your program for maximum efficacy will be addressed taking into consideration wine regions located on both east and west sides of the Cascades. Doctor of Plant Pathology Michelle Moyer of Washington State University will explain powdery mildew biology while Dr. Jay Pscheidt of Oregon State University will take an in-depth exploration into management details for the disease. Dr Andrew Landers of Cornell University and author of Farm Machinery Investment and Management Effective Vineyard Spraying, will discuss a multidisciplinary approach to pesticide application and provide tips for working with biologists to ensure engineering techniques are biologically effective.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Andrew Landers studied and taught agricultural engineering in England. He joined the faculty at Cornell University in 1998, and is based at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. His research group works with application systems in fruit production across the world and he believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to pesticide application, working with biologists to ensure engineering techniques are biologically effective. In 2007 he was presented with the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences at Cornell University award for outstanding accomplishments in extension and outreach. In 2010 the New York Wine and Grape foundation presented him with the research award for major contributions in research and education. In 2011 he was presented with the NY IPM award for his research and extension. Additionally, he has authored three books on farm machinery investment and vineyard/orchard spraying.
Russell Moss is the vineyard management instructor at Chemeketa Community College and the Oregon field representative for Sunridge Nursery. Prior to this, he was the viticulturist for Domaine Serene – Chateau de la Cree. As a vineyard manager in New Zealand, his technical work on grape growing and winemaking has been published in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and South Africa. 2018 will see the release of his own ultra-premium wine brand paying homage to his family, Bocamo. Russell holds a bachelor of viticulture and enology from Lincoln University (New Zealand), a masters of horticulture (viticulture) and a masters of food science and technology (enology) from Virginia Tech.
Michelle Moyer is an associate professor and the viticulture extension specialist at Washington State University. Located at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Prosser, WA, her research and extension programs focus on pest management, canopy management, and general integrated vineyard management in wine and juice grapes. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in genetics and plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and earned her PhD in plant pathology at Cornell University.
Jay W. Pscheidt received his PhD in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. Since 1988 he has been a professor at Oregon State University, and extension plant pathology specialist. His principal duties are to lead a statewide extension program related to the diagnosis and management of diseases of all fruit, nut and ornamental/nursery crops. He is also co-editor of regional publication The Pacific Northwest Plant Disease Management Handbook.
